The analysis of the educational programs for family caregivers to manage problematic behaviors among patients with dementia

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review the educational programs for family caregivers of patients with dementia to manage problematic behaviors and provide meaningful data to develop the educational programs to manage problematic behaviors in patients with dementia.

Methods: Electronic databases were used for searching with the key words including ¡®dementia¡¯, ¡®family caregiver¡¯, ¡®education¡¯, ¡®program¡¯. Finally, a total of 15 studies were included for the analysis based on the inclusion criteria.

Results: The most commonly used research design was the quasi experimental design and the most commonly used tool of providing program was ¡®PPT¡¯ and ¡®manuals¡¯. In the contents of the educational programs, the concept of dementia, the concept of problematic behaviors and stress management skills were commonly included. Currently, training of coping stills with problematic behaviors, the emotional support, and the social services were increased. The significant effects were shown on caregivers¡¯ self-efficacy, caring experience, depression and so on with the program.

Conclusion: For the future studies, training the practical coping skills to the problematic behaviors and increasing the social networks with family caregivers need to be included to the educational programs for family caregivers to manage problematic behaviors in patients with dementia.
